Mike O'Malley Joins R.I.P.D.

Along with model Marisa MillerSupernatural cop comic book adaptation R. I. P. D. is having an attack of the Ms in its latest casting round as Glee supporting actor Mike O'Malley and Victoria's Secret model Marisa Miller have both signed on for small roles. R. I. P. D. will star Ryan Reynolds as a police officer cut down in the line of duty. But his work isn't finished even though he's passed on: he's assigned to the titular force, a squad of deceased cops who patrol the line between the living and the dead and make sure no spirits are causing chaos. Reynolds' character is also on the hunt for the man who killed him. Jeff Bridges is playing his partner, a long-dead gruff type who has seen it all before. Miller's performance will be linked to his, as she'll be the avatar for his spirit that living people see when he's walking the Earth. Should make for an interesting visual...Kevin Bacon is on board as a villain, while Mary-Louise Parker will be Reynolds and Bridges' boss. Plus there's Stephanie Szostak as Reynolds' widow, who he tries to warn about the murderer he's tracking. O'Malley plays Kurt's father on Glee and is also among the writing staff for the US version of Shameless. On R. I. P. D. , he'll be ghostly character Elliot. Miller, usually to be found gracing the pages of Sports Illustrated and lingerie ads, has cropped up on US TV in the likes of How I Met Your Mother and (of course!) Entourage. This will mark her first movie role. And there's one other chunk of casting to announce, with The Hollywood Reporter bringing word that Blade Runner/Big Trouble in Little China's James Hong (probably best known to younger audiences as the voice of Po's father Mr Ping in Kung Fu Panda is now aboard to play Reynolds' Earthly avatar. Red's Robert Schwentke is kicking off shooting next week.

Final rites for Fairness rule

GenachowskiThe Fairness Doctrine is officially dead. The FCC regulation, which required that the holders of broadcast licenses present controversial issues in a balanced way, was wiped off the agency's books on Monday as part of a housecleaning of what the commission described as "83 obsolete media-related rules." Although the FCC voted to eliminate the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, it was still on the books, though not enforced. In the years since, the rule has been a flashpoint for conservative talkradio hosts who suggested that it somehow might be reinstated as an effort by liberals way to stifle their voices.FCC chairman Julius Genachowski, who has previously said he opposed the Fairness Doctrine, said the commission's action "will remove an unnecessary distraction.""As I have said, striking this from our books ensures there can be no mistake that what has long been a dead letter remains dead," he said. "The Fairness Doctrine holds the potential to chill free speech and the free flow of ideas and was properly abandoned over two decades ago."The doctrine dated to 1949 and was meant to address concerns over broadcasters' ability to meet public interest obligations. With a limited amount of spectrum available, the concern was that holders of licenses could merely turn their stations into their own mouthpieces, promoting their own points of view while shutting out others. Over the years the FCC refined the doctrine, allowing editorializing as long as alternate views were given opportunity to respond. Also added were rules requiring stations to present issues of community importance. And in an historic 1969 ruling, Red Lion Broadcasting vs. FCC, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the FCC's ability to enforce it.By the 1980s, as cable TV took hold, critics said there was ample media to reflect different opinions. After a review and a district court ruling, the FCC abandoned the reg in a 4-0 vote.Nevertheless, some Democratic lawmakers since then have revived the idea of reinstating the doctrine, citing the state of discourse over the airwaves and concerns that local issues were being overlooked by broadcasters. But any suggestion that it would be reinstated has been met by expressions of alarm from opponents and many conservatives, including Reagan administration veterans who originally pushed for the FCC to abandon it because of its First Amendment implications. The FCC also eliminated the obsolete "broadcast flag" rule and another having to do with cable programming service tier rates. Taylor Lautner's 'Abduction' to Hit Video-On-Demand Only Three Months After Theaters

If you're willing to wait three months for Taylor Lautner's new film, you could see it even cheaper than at many theaters. Lionsgate just announced it will release 'Abduction' on video-on-demand just three months after its theatrical release, and for a mere $6.99. That's a whole lot cheaper than the whopping $30 that some studios have been charging for VOD titles on DirecTV. Theater owners have protested the recent trend of having movies appear on VOD so soon after they debut on the big screen, saying it eats into their box office receipts. Lionsgate will release the film to all VOD providers and via Wal-Mart and Best Buy online. If you want the movie in high definition, the price is a still fairly reasonable $7.99, still cheaper than the current average movie ticket price of $7.97. (As determined by Box Office Mojo.) 'Abduction,' in which Lautner stars as a teen whose realization that he was abducted as a child makes him the center of a deadly manhunt, opens in theaters on September 23. Would you rather see Taylor on the big screen or can you wait three months for VOD? [via TheWrap]
